Hair shedding after childbirth: what to expect
Care advice for new mums during temporary shedding, with signs to discuss with a dermatologist.
Increased hair shedding after childbirth is common and usually temporary. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it tends to peak around four months, and many women regain their usual fullness by their child's first birthday.
Care while it lasts
Wash gently. Apply conditioner mainly to the ends and detangle carefully, starting from the bottom. Choose hairstyles that avoid tension on the scalp.
When to see a dermatologist
If fullness has not returned after a year, or you are unsure what is causing the shedding, a dermatologist can identify the cause and recommend next steps.
