Argan Oil or Prickly Pear Seed Oil: How to Choose

Argan oil and prickly pear seed oil are not two names for the same ingredient. The safest choice starts with the label, not a promise on the front of the pack.

Four checks before buying

  1. INCI: pure argan oil lists Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil. Prickly pear seed oil lists Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil. The word seed matters: an extract or fruit oil is not the same ingredient.
  2. Origin: look for the country and, when stated, the region. AZOURANE argan comes from the Souss-Massa region of Morocco.
  3. Format: a one-ingredient bottle is not the same as a finished formula containing that ingredient alongside others.
  4. Use and directions: for a pure oil, follow the amount in drops. For a serum, balm or mask, follow the directions for the complete formula.

When to choose argan oil

Choose argan when you want one cosmetic oil for a simple face routine, dry body areas, hair ends or nails. AZOURANE 100% argan oil has one ingredient on the INCI label. Apply a small amount, a few drops or less depending on the area.

When to choose prickly pear seed oil

Choose it when the label clearly lists Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil and you want that specific ingredient or a formula that contains it. Do not assume the word “prickly pear” means pure seed oil: read the complete INCI and product directions.

If you are choosing between a pure oil and a formula

A pure oil lets you know exactly which ingredient you are applying. A finished formula can contain prickly pear or argan alongside water, emulsifiers, fragrance and other ingredients. This is not a better-or-worse comparison; they are different formats. Choose by the label and how you want to use it.

The shortest answer

Argan: Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil. Prickly pear seed: Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil. Then check origin, product format and directions. Colour, scent, price or skin feel alone do not prove composition.
