What aker fassi is: the tradition, the colour and the AZGGAGH balm
Aker fassi is a rosy red color that Moroccan women have applied to their lips and cheeks for generations. The name comes from Fez, the city where the tradition lived longest, and in everyday speech the word itself long ago became shorthand for natural lip pigment. Before tubes and palettes, aker fassi was how a woman brought color to her face with what grew around her.
Where the color comes from
The pigment comes from wild poppy extract, also known as Papaver Rhoeas. For generations, the petals of this flower, deep red and thin as silk, were dried and worked into a powder or paste that stains the skin. Iron oxides, a mineral pigment, are added to keep the shade warm and alive.
How it was once used
Traditionally, aker fassi was kept in small boxes or wraps and passed from generation to generation, often as part of a bride's trousseau. It was applied with a finger, in thin layers, because the color builds gradually. The same pigment served both lips and cheeks, which is rare in today's makeup world, where every product has one narrowly defined job.
Aker fassi today: the AZGGAGH balm
